BTI Associate Director
Founded in 1998, the BioTechnical Institute of Maryland (BTI)’s mission is to provide tuition-free, specialized job training for underemployed Marylanders to help them transition into careers in the life sciences industry. BTI is funded through a combination of private foundation grants, government funding and corporate grants. BTI graduates have been employed by the leading life sciences, food industry and biotech manufacturing companies in the mid-Atlantic region. Over the past 18 years, BTI has expanded into a well-established workforce development organization in Maryland.
In addition to its various training programs, BTI serves biotech employers by providing fee-based, professional development workshops in relevant science topics through BioSciConcepts, BTI’s social venture. BioSciConcepts offers a schedule of cutting-edge life sciences workshops designed for industry professionals, at all stages of their science careers. The revenue generated by BioSciConcepts’ workshops helps fund BTI programs.
BTI’s market is local and regional. BioSciConcepts’ market is domestic and international.
The Associate Director (AD) position is a newly created position, with excellent growth potential. For a candidate with a good foundation of grant-writing who is looking for greater responsibility and skill development, this position offers the opportunity to advance their administrative, fiscal, development, operational and marketing skills at an established and well-funded nonprofit.
Fundraising and Grant-writing
• Develop and maintain existing grants and contributions through conscientious reporting and outreach to existing and new potential funders.

• AD, partnering with the ED, will be expected to expand revenue through new foundations and grant development.

• Prepare and write new grants, following the proposal requirements of individual grantors, including the necessary budget guidelines.

• Research and develop a network for new potential funding and corporate foundations, city/state funding grants.

Maintaining and Fostering Relationships
• Build and strengthen partnerships with existing and new life sciences organizations, employers and leaders of Maryland’s life sciences and technology sectors.
• Be responsible for new “relationship marketing” with BTI volunteers, board members, city and state government officials.
Leadership and Management

• Guide activities with BTI volunteers and alumni.

• Meet with Board members, corporate partners, funders, city and state government officials and community leaders, particularly people involved in workforce training, to interpret feedback to develop plans for future

• Ensure effective systems to track progress, and regularly evaluate program components, providing metrics for the Board, funders and other constituents.

• Recommend and develop timelines and resources needed to achieve the strategic goals.
Essential Qualifications
5 – 7 years of experience managing multiple programs in a non-profit organization;

• Mastery with spreadsheets, setting up reports, preparing presentations demonstrated skill with compiling data and reports;

• Must possess excellent written and oral communication skills;

• Experience with a variety of grants and fee-for-service contracts– federal, state, private funders – and demonstrated success in development and grant-writing;

• Experience handling complex financials and demonstrated successful fiscal management;

• Ability to work closely with people at all levels of professional organizations ;

• Demonstrated experience in supporting Boards and Governance where team-building and problem solving skills are utilized;
